The Hate U Give REVIEW

The meaning: T.H.U.G. I was brought back when I found out what it stood for. It got deep when I found out who more or less gave that meaning ; TuPac a legend where he’s music legacy is clear as day.

I watched this movie for the first time in November with my friend. The movie was so detailed on the ins and outs of what a brown-skinned family would face because of the colour of their skin in America.

You can tell this movie was created to make us embrace Starr (main character) - to feel the pain of Starr’s family as if it were our own, to feel the pain Starr felt when her friend Khalil died and then suddenly later on she realised her other best friend passed away when they were younger in a drive-by shooting! There was a lot of back and forth that as an audience you would only get towards the end.

This movie was so deep that it made us have more clarity of the ignorance and softened hate we go through by society. The hate could even be by our close ones that we expected to see us for who we were just like Starr’s boyfriend although he was not a brown-skinned man. Though he was not brown-skin, he did not and does not experience the injustice we have but he showed honesty and made Starr to not feel alone in her world of troubles.

When it comes to race, everyone is not perfect. There is an extent of trying to prove something and the results usually are radical which ends up being violent. This should not be the case from both parties proving their points.

T.H.U.G depicts the honesty and strips us down of the pain and the “ghettoness” that we have been perceived to have over the years and what we go through day to day. This is America via media. Most who are reading this are from the UK yet we face similar injustices.

The part that fully got to me was the part with Starr’s little brother when their dad’s shop was on fire and was confronted by the King Lord gang to the point that the police arrived and Starr’s little brother took a small gun out of his pocket aiming at King Lord! (It starts from a young age because of what they see)
Time stood still and the imagery and  the way it was illustrated made me cry because this is reality!

There needs to be unity within our community. In this movie it was shown that unity was only present only when hate was shown towards fellow brown-skinned people who would then react with hate.

Let’s step back and look at the future for ourselves and our future generation. WE CAN DO THIS TOGETHER in positive ways through our success! We’ve gone through UNCOUNTABLE challenges, yet we still stand to tell our stories.

To create a diamond or gold or any type of crystal that element MUST go through the dirt and pressure to become what is designed to be on our crowns today! So take time to think of how to use our voices and stand up for what is right.

Our weapons are our VOICES! Let’s not get carried away with what society has implanted in our hearts using violence and lets use our mind to change our futures because THE TIME IS NOW!

Being brown-skinned is to embrace ourselves more, to love ourselves more. We are equal but we have to ensure the love starts within!
